I think that one of the things that most bedevils my beloved Haiti is the tradition of impunity, of which the Jean Dominique case is only the most stark example. There are thousands of little-known souls who have suffered a similar fate. After the end of the military regime that ruled Haiti from 1991-1994, only a very few of those with blood on their hands were ever made to answer for their crimes. Likewise for the criminal excesses of the sanguinary second Aristide regime itself (2001-2004) and the interim government that came after him (2004-2006). As Dominique&#039;s widow, Michele Montas, once memorably said, all Haitians are asking for is a decent country, and that is what they deserve.
